9th March 2015

I booked a training session with Jon the
week after I came out of hospital taking
it easy and to see what I could do, we
worked mainly on my movement to see what I
could do without causing any additional
pain to what I was already experiencing.
The whole session we were cautious with my
rib that was still causing the most pain,
it was bound to cause a slight increase in
pain as my breathing increased and rib
cage moved but I persevered and it was
bearable. We kept the weights low and reps
at a minimum , I enjoyed being back in the
gym, it was the main thing I missed about
being in hospital. I did get very
frustrated with myself because it felt
like I was pretty much starting from
scratch again with the smallest weights
and I was finding things hard that I
didn't even struggle with when I first
started training with Jon! I was almost
embarrassed at the fact I was getting out
of breath at the smallest movements but my
body just wasn't used to anything other
than being led in a bed. The scales
shocked me in that I'd lost just under two
stone sat on my bum in there for six week,
I knew my body fat would have gone up
considerably because from day one in
hospital I was eating just because I
didn't have the appetite, I rarely ate at
all and if I did it was a few mouthfuls if
that. Rice crispies and a piece of white
toast is not the Ketogenic diet I was used
to! I was a skinny minnie when I came out,
I have always wanted to be skinny but I
hated it, didnt suit it at alland for once
I wanted to put weight on, I needed to! I
was the lightest I've been in a very long
time and my body fat had shot up by four
percent so it was time to eat and I did, I
was eating childrens portions but almost
every hour!
I've now put half the weight back on by
just eating a normal diet I'm not yet back
on the ketogenic diet but I wasn't on an
awful fatty sugar filled diet, just in
time to go back to hospital for another
round with the chemotherapy. But this time
my gloves are on and it's not going to
make me feel so ill without a fight this
time and when I come out I am determined
to get back into training as recently the
pain has been too much to train and it's
been a roller coaster of feeling ill and
mediocre. I've now felt what it's like to
be at rock bottom with my health I now
need to show these tumours what I'm like
in my prime with training hard and real
clean eating on my Ketogenic diet!

22nd February 2015

Well its been a while since I wrote my
last blog, its been a rough couple of
months! I welcomed in the New Year with an
infection from Satan himself! I went into
hospital at the beginning of January
expecting to start my next round of
chemotherapy but that was put on hold when
they found that my bloods weren't as they
should have been and I was spiking some
very high temperatures, not to mention I
felt really low on energy. It took the
doctors a good few weeks to find out where
the infection was coming from and even
then there was no concrete evidence that
it was from the line I had fitted in my
arm to administer the chemotherapy which
was then surgically removed. The infection
seemed to have taken over my whole body
hence why it took so long to get under
control. After a few weeks once the
doctors thought the infection was under
control I was allowed home but then a few
days later I was admitted back into
hospital because I seemed to have fallen
back to feeling how i felt previously. It
then took another couple of weeks to
finally get rid of the infection for me to
then be able to finally start the
chemotherapy I was expecting to have four
weeks.
The chemotherapy was changed to a stronger
almost neat dose compared to the previous
one and boy did I feel it! The treatment
seemed to knock me out and make me very
tired all the time so I stayed in hospital
for the full two weeks I was attached to
the drip even though it is a mobile
treatment I seemed to be bed bound for the
majority of time I was in hospital and
this had knock on effects on my strength
and body composition.
When I finally got discharged after a
draining six weeks I had lost a noticeable
amount of weight and struggled walking
mainly along side a few other issues I was
struggling with. The hospital
physiotherapist had given me exercises to
do to strengthen the muscles around my
joints again but in my stubbornness I
didn't do the exercises and the day I got
home I did about half an hour of walking
and for the rest of the day and night my
knees were causing so much pain. This soon
eased the more I did a little walking here
and there, I was itching to get back into
training; to get my bum back! But I still
felt weak especially in my knees and was
experiencing a lot of pain in my rib where
the main tumour is. I'm still unsure on
the cause of the pain in my rib, it could
be the tumour which would suggest that
this chemotherapy isn't working or it
could be the result of a fall I had the
day after I came out of hospital.
Hopefully now I can put those couple of
months behind me and gently get my body
back where it used to be!

Friday 26th December

Just tucking into my favourite tea as I update you this time; chicken, chorizo, green beans, pesto and Cajun spices! Wouldn't even know there aren't carbs, so tasty! So we got a scan result back showing some growth on all the areas of the tumours, not fantastic news but it just fuels me to try harder. Although it showed growth I picked up that between the scans and cycles of chemotherapy two noticeable lumps had shrunk and then come back which suggested something in the process was working. My consultant had no explanation for this change, maybe it was the Ketogenic diet with training? So because I was getting no benefit out of staying on that chemotherapy he decided to change to a different chemotherapy in the hope it’ll give the tumours a kick as this new one has worked well before. I got straight into the first cycle and it made me feel awful and the worst bit was I had to cancel one of my training sessions with Jon, its three weeks before each dose so I can get back to normal and get back in the gym to train hard before I've got to go back in again.

So I’m welcoming 2015 in with even more determination and hunger to train harder and eat cleaner. After seeing a small possible difference this time from eating ketogenic with a few treat days here and there imagine what I could do by committing myself completely and training harder than ever, so my New Year’s resolution is to train three times a week and find some new yummy ketogenic recipes! Hope you’ve all had a lovely Christmas, All the best for the New Year!
